Architecture is art imbued with purpose and power. It imposes its beliefs upon our everyday lives. It upholds political structures, shapes how and what we see. It is not merely the lens through which we view reality; it is the virtual reality console itself.
Jacques Lacan proposed a theory of mind in which the self is constructed through a series of identifications or non-identifications with the world around it. We are constantly viewing ourselves as this or not-that. Our self-constructions are imbued with the chemical trails of everything which surrounds us on a daily basis. This theory applies to the physical and the non-physical: in a mind where you are tall you must first be not-short, and thus alternatively tall. This signaling both informs and defines us.
This being true, we must acknowledge how the built environment forces that semiotic reaction. In response to the massive-scale building, we are all miniscule. In a city where private money pays for all new construction, to be without money is to be without power. Alternatively, to possess money is to possess power, not only in capital, but the world-building power of gods of lore; to envision and construct the Lego buildings of youth in grand scale upon the planet.
Plus they can shoot you from a camera tower if you get too close.
